Day 1 : Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Elevation: 7,800ft to 9,500ft

Distance: 6 km

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Habitat: Rainforest

Description: Depart from Arusha/Moshi for Lemosho Gate (approx. 4 hours). After completing entry formalities, drive to the Lemosho trailhead (additional hour). Enjoy lunch, then begin your trek through the lush, undisturbed forest to the first campsite.

Day 2 : Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira Camp 1

Elevation: 9,500ft to 11,500ft

Distance: 8 km

Hiking Time: 5-6 hours

Habitat: Moorland

Description: Continue from the forest into a savannah of tall grasses and volcanic rock. Ascend through rolling hills, cross streams, and reach Shira Ridge before descending to Shira Camp 1. Enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo across the plateau.

Day 3 : Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2 to Moir Hut

Elevation: 11,500ft to 13,800ft

Distance: 14 km

Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

Habitat: Moorland

Description: Explore the Shira Plateau with a gentle walk east toward Kibo's glacier peak. Pass Shira Camp 2 on moorland meadows by a stream, then continue to Moir Hut, located at the base of Lent Hills. Take advantage of the acclimatization opportunity and explore the area.

Day 4 : Moir Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 13,800ft to 13,000ft

Distance: 7 km

Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

Habitat: Semi Desert

Description: Ascend east from Moir Hut towards Lava Tower, known as the "Shark's Tooth," and continue to the Arrow Glacier. Descend to Barranco Camp. This day helps with acclimatization despite ending at the same altitude as the starting point.

Day 5 : Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 13,000ft to 15,000ft

Distance: 9 km

Hiking Time: 8-10 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Description: After breakfast, navigate the steep Barranco Wall, then proceed to Karanga Valley. Continue to Barafu Camp, completing the South Circuit with diverse views of the summit. Prepare for the summit day while enjoying the views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

Day 6 : Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut

Elevation: 15,300ft to 19,345ft (and down to 10,000ft)

Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent

Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent

Habitat: Arctic

Description: Begin the summit ascent between midnight and 2 am. Climb through the scree to Stella Point on the crater rim, then to Uhuru Peak. Enjoy the magnificent sunrise if the weather permits. Descend to Mweka Hut via Barafu for lunch. Prepare for mist or rain in the late afternoon at Mweka Camp.

Day 7 : Mweka Camp to Moshi

Elevation: 10,000ft to 5,400ft

Distance: 10 km

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Habitat: Rainforest

Description: After breakfast, descend to Mweka Park Gate to collect your summit certificate. Continue to Mweka Village, where a vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha/Moshi.

Tips for Climbing and Avoiding Altitude Sickness:

  • Ascend Slowly: Follow your guides' advice to go "Pole, pole" (slowly, slowly). Gradual ascent helps with acclimatization. Rest days can increase your chances of reaching the summit and improve your overall experience.
  • Climb High, Sleep Low: Climb to higher altitudes during the day, but sleep at lower altitudes to help acclimate. Additional acclimatization hikes can be incorporated into your itinerary.
  • Hydration and Nutrition: Drink 4-5 liters of fluid daily and maintain a high-calorie diet, even if your appetite decreases. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and depressant drugs.
  • Respond to Symptoms: If you experience altitude sickness, don’t ascend further until symptoms decrease. If symptoms worsen, descend immediately.
