Arusha National Park is located north of Arusha between Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro. It includes also the second-highest mountain in Tanzania the Mount Meru (4562m), it is an extinct volcano with the Little Meru (3801m) and the famous Ash Cone. Other attractions are the Momella Lakes and the Ngurdoto Crater, as well as the small Serengeti. The Park was opened in 1960 as Ngurdoto Crater National Park, 1967 Mount Meru was integrated into the park. It has a size of 137 km². The landscape combines forests, swamps, grassland, lakes, alpine rocks, and highlands.
Game viewing around the Momella Lakes in Arusha is at a laid-back and quiet pace, and while passing through the forest many visitors stop to search for troupes of rare colobus monkeys playing in the canopy. Although elephants are rare in Arusha National Park and lions are absent, leopards and spotted hyenas may be seen in the early morning and late afternoon. Giraffes glide across the grassy hills, between grazing zebra herds, while pairs of wide-eyed dik-dik dart into the bush. The park provides an excellent birding year, particularly between November and April when migratory birds from Europe and North Africa are present and the local birds display their breeding plumage.
