Tana River Primate Reserve is situated 350km east of Nairobi and two hundred and forty kilometers north of Mombasa in the Tana River district. The reserve was formed to protect the two endangered primates; the red colobus monkey and Mangabey and the Tana riverine forest. The ecosystem is made up of dry woodlands, riparian forests, and savannah habitats on the east and west of the lower Tana River.
The major wildlife attraction to the reserve is the two primate species. More than two hundred bird species have also been recorded here, these include the African Open-bill Stork, White-winged Apalis, African Pygmy-falcon, Black-bellied Glossy-starling, African Barred Owlet, Martial Eagle, Scaly Babbler, Bat Hawk, and the Golden Pipit.
